Kind words

Our family was broken, devastated. Our beloved 17 year old daughter, light of our lives, had attempted to take her own life. We never saw it coming. And we were lucky. She survived. But she had sounded the alarm. We all needed help. We had lost trust and faith in one another. We were scared. No one felt safe anymore. But how do you know who to trust when your lives are on the line? How can you tell if a person knows what they are doing? We had already made missteps. We knew we needed just the right person, but we didn’t know what that might look like.

We crisscrossed the country searching for a therapist who our uber-intelligent, charming daughter could not outsmart. It was the glint in Emily’s eye that tipped us off. She was the one. Her curiosity, warmth, and innate joy, combined with a certain steeliness and spark told us she could help our daughter. We did not yet know that she would help all of us heal, and bring our family back together as a unit. We put ourselves in Emily’s competent hands.

Over the course of several months, Emily helped our beautiful daughter find her feet again. She was able to foment the kind of trust that was critical for our daughter to grow and learn. And she was also able to manage us as parents. She educated us in new ways of thinking, new ways of seeing our family dynamic, new ways of seeing each other. She connected with all of the players in our family, no matter their age or, in some cases, resistance to the work that had to be done. Emily was not afraid to hold each one of us accountable, and to simultaneously help us find the way to step up in ways that made us feel confident, more assured. And when we had to leave the state, Emily stood by us, helping us figure out what kind of therapist our daughter would need going forward. She gently handed us off to the next steps in our journey.

Our daughter is now a college graduate, living on her own. She is out there, fighting the dragons of the world, with confidence. And we, as parents, are able to be by her side, though we live states away. None of this would have been possible without Emily’s patience, humor, skill, and, most definitely, grit.
